James 5:13-18
James reminds us that "the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective." Prayer is not a religious ritual; it is the lifeline of the believer.
Four kinds of prayer in this passage:
1. PRAYER IN TROUBLE (v.13). When we are afflicted, we run to the throne of grace, not to the comforts of the world.
2. PRAISE IN JOY (v.13). Cheerfulness is met with songs of praise — gratitude is its own form of prayer.
3. PRAYER FOR HEALING (v.14-15). The elders are to pray over the sick. Healing is the work of God; we are simply called to bring our sick to Him in faith.
4. CONFESSIONAL PRAYER (v.16). We pray for one another, confess to one another, and find restoration.
The example of Elijah (v.17-18) shows that ordinary, sincere prayer can move heaven. He was "a human being, even as we are" — yet he prayed earnestly and the heavens responded.
Do not give up praying. Heaven is listening. The God of Elijah is also your God.
